Pharmacy Resources: Prescription Drug Benefit

>>>K.I.M. Project

K.I.M. is a collaborative project developed by the Quality Improvement Organizations of Kansas, Illinois and Missouri.

Partnering with Prescription Drug Plans administering the Medicare prescription drug benefit, this quality improvement project goals include:

  • Increasing awareness of Medication Therapy Management (MTM) through education of Medicare beneficiaries and Medicare providers
  • Assessing barriers to MTM initiatives
  • Evaluating MTM impact on selected outcomes
  • Identifying successful components of MTM implementation and delivery

All prescription drug plans administering the Medicare Part D benefit are required to provide a MTM program targeting beneficiaries with complex medical needs including those with multiple chronic diseases on multiple prescription drugs and with at least $4,000 in annual drug costs.

Currently there are no uniformly accepted standards for practice or performance measures for MTM, and the MTM program structure may vary from plan to plan. The K.I.M. project may help identify MTM best practices.
